Varanasi to Gwalior: a week through Khajuraho, Panna and Orchha

This is a one-way route across the middle of north India, from the Ganges at Varanasi to the fort at Gwalior. It is short, and it moves most days. What it offers in return is variety: a holy city, carved temples, a tiger reserve, a river town and a hill fort in a single week.

7 days · 6 nights · Best in: The cooler months

Why does this route run one way?

Because the places lie in a line. Varanasi is in the east and Gwalior in the west, with Khajuraho, Panna and Orchha strung between them. Going one way means no day is spent retracing the road, which matters when there are only seven.

Gwalior is on the main railway between Delhi and the south, so the route ends somewhere easy to leave. The plan closes the loop back to Varanasi only so that it has an end; change that last journey to wherever comes next.

What is there to see in Varanasi?

  • The ghats. The stepped riverbank where the city bathes, prays and cremates its dead. Walk it, and see it once from a boat.
  • Kashi Vishwanath. The temple of Shiva at the heart of the old city, reached through narrow lanes.
  • Sarnath. The place just outside the city where the Buddha is said to have given his first teaching.

How much time do Khajuraho and Panna need?

A night each, on this plan. Khajuraho’s temples stand in a few groups and the main one can be seen in half a day; Kalinjar, a hill fort a drive away, fills the rest. Panna is a short drive away, and one night there allows a jeep safari in the tiger reserve and a boat on the Ken River.

One night in a forest is a gamble where wildlife is concerned. Anyone who wants a real chance of seeing a tiger should add a night at Panna and take it from somewhere else.

What are Orchha and Gwalior like?

Orchha is small and quiet: a palace complex on an island in the Betwa, temples that tower over a market town, and the cenotaphs of its kings along the river. Gwalior is a city under a long sandstone hill, and the fort runs the length of the top.

In Gwalior, the Man Singh Palace on the fort is known for the bands of coloured tile on its walls. Below the hill, the Jai Vilas Palace is the grand house of the Scindia family, part of it open as a museum.

Quick answers

How many days do you need from Varanasi to Gwalior?

A week covers it with two nights in Varanasi and one each in Khajuraho, Panna, Orchha and Gwalior. Add nights rather than places if there is more time.

Is one night at Panna enough for a tiger safari?

It is enough for one or two drives, but sightings are never certain. Two or three nights give a much better chance.

Where does this route end?

At Gwalior, which is on the main railway line towards Delhi and Agra, so it is simple to carry on from there.

Before you book: check the whole trip at once

With four stays of a single night, one missing booking breaks the chain: two of the places to stay on this plan are left for the traveller to choose, and are easy to forget.
