Tigers and temples: Bandhavgarh, Khajuraho, Agra and Ranthambore in one trip
Most trips to India choose between wildlife and monuments. This one alternates them: a tiger reserve, then temples, then the Taj Mahal, then another tiger reserve, then a city of forts. The change of pace every few days is the point of it.

Why two tiger reserves?
For a second chance, in a different landscape. Bandhavgarh is sal forest and meadow in the hills of central India. Ranthambore, in Rajasthan, is dry scrub and lakes under a ruined fort, where tigers are sometimes seen among old pavilions. Three nights at each gives several drives in both.
They also sit at opposite ends of the route, so the monuments fall naturally between them.
How does the route join up?
- Into the forest. A flight from Delhi to Jabalpur, then by road to Bandhavgarh, which has no airport of its own.
- To the temples. By road to Khajuraho for two nights.
- To Agra. By road to Orchha for a walk through its palaces and temples, then by train to Agra.
- To Rajasthan. By road to Ranthambore, and on to Jaipur, before the return to Delhi.
What are the Khajuraho temples?

A group of Hindu and Jain temples built by the Chandela dynasty about a thousand years ago. The largest, the Kandariya Mahadeva, rises in steps like a mountain range, and every surface is carved. A guide is worth having: the carving tells stories that are easy to walk past.
How should you time Agra and Jaipur?
Agra for the Taj Mahal at sunrise, which means arriving the evening before. Jaipur comes last, with Amer Fort and the City Palace, and is close enough to Delhi that the final journey is a short one.
After two forests and a long run of monuments, the two nights in Jaipur are best kept light.
Quick answers
Can you combine a tiger safari with the Taj Mahal?
Yes. Ranthambore is a drive from Agra, and Bandhavgarh can be joined to it by way of Khajuraho and a train from Orchha.
Which is better for tigers, Bandhavgarh or Ranthambore?
Both are well known for sightings, and neither can promise one. Visiting both, with three nights at each, gives the best chance.
How do you reach Bandhavgarh?
By road from Jabalpur, the nearest city with flights. There is no airport at the park itself.
Before you book: check the whole trip at once
A flight, a train and four drives join six stays here, and the day from Khajuraho to Agra, by road to Orchha and then by rail, is where a booking most often goes missing.
