How to split shared trip costs, including across currencies
Splitting a shared trip comes down to three questions: who each expense was for, in what shares, and what exchange rate turns every currency into one.
Equal, or by share
An equal split divides an expense evenly among the people it was for. A custom split gives each person a percentage, which suits a room shared unevenly or a meal not everyone joined.
Why rounding matters
Divide 100.00 three ways and each share rounds to 33.33, which adds up to 99.99. Across a trip with many expenses the lost cents accumulate, and someone ends up short. The planner works in each currency’s smallest unit and hands any remainder to a person, so every split adds back up to the exact total.
Different currencies
When people pay in different currencies, pick one currency to settle in and agree the exchange rate for each conversion. The planner asks for that rate rather than looking one up, so the settlement uses the rate the group agreed.
Settling up
With every expense entered, the result is a short list of who owes whom, rather than a running tally of who paid for what.
