How long a passport needs to be valid for a trip
Entry rules are set by the country being visited, not by the country that issued the passport. Some ask only that a passport stays valid for the length of the stay; others ask for a margin of several months beyond it, and some also require blank pages.
Airlines usually check entry documents at check-in, so a passport can be refused before departure even while it is still valid.
What to look up
For each country on the route, including any where immigration is passed only to change planes, check the official entry requirements: how long the passport must remain valid, and whether that is counted from the day of arrival or the day of departure.
Check every traveller
Passports in one group rarely expire together, and a child’s passport is often issued for fewer years than an adult’s.
The margin the planner flags
The planner warns when a passport has less than 6 months left once the trip ends, and separately when it expires before the trip is over. 6 months is a general guideline, not the rule of any particular country.
The planner checks a trip as you build it, in your browser, with no account.
